Papercourt Sailing Club's ILCA Thames Valley Grand Prix Open Meeting on April 12 delivered thrilling sailing and fierce competition. Here’s why the remarkable turnout and intense races could redefine local sailing events for the season.
With a total of 28 boats competing, including 11 ILCA 7s and 17 ILCA 6s, the event nearly doubled last year's participation. The sunny day brought a moderate southwesterly breeze, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph, creating both excitement and challenges on the water.
In the ILCA 7 fleet, Richard Thomas dominated early races, winning the first and Tim Granger clinching the second. The final race was chaos, with a brutal gust causing multiple capsizes and equipment failures. Ultimately, Tim secured the overall win, followed by Simon Hamment in second and Joe Cic in third.
The ILCA 6 fleet showcased the skills of Lauren Irons, who continued her morning success, while Rebecca Clark took second, and Harry Ramshaw finished third.
Race Officer Martin Smith crafted an excellent course, complemented by a fantastic lunch organized by Jill Hamment and her team. This event not only highlighted the talent within Papercourt but also fostered a strong sense of community.
