The 2026 iQFOiL Open European Championships kick off today in Portimão, Portugal, with 192 competitors from 42 nations ready to battle for supremacy. This six-day event is a highlight on the international iQFOiL calendar, and the challenging conditions promise thrilling races.
Day 1 features a steady northwesterly breeze between 12 and 15 knots, perfect for the Olympic windfoil discipline. The race area, near Praia da Rocha and framed by the historic Santa Catarina Fortress, presents a technically demanding course where sailors must navigate varying wind patterns influenced by the Atlantic swell and coastal geography.
In the Women's fleet, 19-year-old Tamar Steinberg (ISR 216) leads after an impressive performance, winning races with scores of 1, 4, 1, and 5. China's Wenqi Li (CHN 17) follows closely in second, while Norway's Maya Gysler (NOR 21) secures third.
In the Men's fleet, Finn Hawkins (GBR 19) takes the overnight lead with two race wins and a second-place finish. Defending European Champion Johan Søe (DEN 37) is in second, with Olympic bronze medallist Luuc Van Opzeeland (NED 55) in third.
After a spectacular Opening Ceremony, the competition intensifies as sailors prepare for more tactical challenges on Day 2.
