Nineteen-year-old William Wrigley from St Bees, Lake District, is set to embark on an incredible journey, racing back to the UK in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. This is the only global event that transforms everyday people into competitive sailors, regardless of their prior experience.
William's passion ignited in a Tesco car park, where he first learned about the Clipper Race during a trip with his dad to Oban, Scotland. A chance encounter with a Clipper boat at the Southampton Boat Show solidified his ambition. He realized he could train and compete in the race during his gap year, which includes navigating the Panama Canal and crossing the North Atlantic Ocean.
Participants must complete four levels of rigorous training at the race's Portsmouth HQ, preparing them for extreme weather and the realities of life onboard. William embraced the challenges, noting that catering for a crew presented a unique test.
As he gears up for this monumental race, William's journey exemplifies how dreams can become reality, proving that determination and opportunities can arise in the most unexpected places.
