Irish solo sailor Tom Dolan, the 2024 Solitaire du Figaro champion, returns to the iconic race on Sunday, May 17. This year’s challenge spans three legs and covers 1,700 nautical miles, equivalent to rounding Ireland three times—completely solo. After withdrawing from the 2025 edition due to injury, Dolan enters the 2026 race with renewed vigor and a fresh perspective.
Dolan embraces the underdog role, stating, "Winning the Figaro twice is very difficult, but I feel well prepared and somehow ready." The fleet recently faced intense conditions in the previous race, leading to repairs for many, but Dolan's Kingspan sustained only minimal damage. This allows him to focus on strategy for the demanding three weeks ahead.
The opening leg promises to be particularly challenging, taking sailors from Perros-Guirec, France, across the English Channel and down to Vigo, Spain. Dolan anticipates tricky winds and tactical battles, especially near Cap Finisterre. Reflecting on his past disappointment, he aims to enjoy the experience, saying, "My aim this year is to go and have fun." Following La Solitaire, Dolan prepares for the 2026 Round Ireland Race, eager to add another title to his achievements. His focus now is solely on tackling this prestigious race.
