Major League Baseball introduces the automated ball-strike (ABS) challenge system during this spring training, set to launch officially in 2026. Teams start each game with two challenges to appeal ball or strike calls, retaining successful ones. Only pitchers, catchers, or batters can initiate challenges, signaling with a head tap or vocal cue within two seconds of the call.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts emphasizes the strategic element of these challenges, while Padres manager Craig Stammen notes that teams are still determining ground rules. The system aims to reduce significant missed calls rather than guarantee perfect accuracy.
Players will be measured to ensure strike-zone accuracy, customized to their height. While the strike-zone box will remain on broadcasts, it will no longer indicate ball or strike. A five-second delay on pitch location will also be implemented. The ABS challenge system is designed to enhance fairness in the game.
