The Irish Match Racing Association's qualifier at Howth Yacht Club faced fierce winds but still delivered thrilling action. This event highlights the growing popularity of match racing, showcasing the skill and strategy of top teams.
Eight teams, including a squad from Poland, entered the competition, setting the stage for an exciting weekend. However, gusts over 20 knots created tough conditions right from the start. The Race Committee and competitors bravely took to the water on Saturday, racing a short course between the West Pier and Ireland's Eye. Races were designed to be quick, lasting just 10-12 minutes, but only two flights could be completed before the day was called off due to worsening weather.
Sunday brought a glimmer of hope with an improved forecast. Racing resumed promptly in the same area, but the wind picked up again, forcing an early end to the day. Four additional flights were completed, allowing enough results to determine the winners despite not finishing a full round robin series.
Joint winners Ruairi Finnegan and Michal Grygelwski both excelled amid challenging conditions. While the weather cut the event short, the competitors remained upbeat, reflecting on the exciting racing that did unfold.
