Significant alterations have occurred over the decades, including the controversial repositioning of walls at the Porsche Curves in 2018 and the flattening of the Mulsanne hump in 2001. The most seismic change happened in 1990 when two chicanes were introduced on the iconic Mulsanne Straight, altering a key aspect of the race. For nearly 70 years, drivers experienced the thrill of barreling down the straight at top speed, a hallmark of the event.
This change sparked debate, with five-time winner Derek Bell noting the bumpy first chicane contrasted sharply with the smooth second. Bell argued that the new setup introduced dangers, as drivers now faced challenges of overtaking and braking into the chicanes. Tim Harvey echoed this sentiment, suggesting that the race lost some of its character with the changes.
