The #8 Toyota Racing car surprises everyone by taking the lead in the 2026 Le Mans 24 Hours just one hour into the race, despite starting from 15th on the grid. This dramatic turn of events demonstrates the strategic brilliance of early pit stops.
Kevin Magnussen’s #15 BMW, which started on pole, dropped to eighth after struggling with pace. Will Stevens in the #12 Cadillac and Rene Rast in the #20 BMW both passed him early on, with Rast even establishing a notable gap. However, the race shifted when Sebastien Buemi in the #8 Toyota executed a perfect pit strategy, emerging from the pits in first place.
As of 5 PM local time, Buemi has pulled away impressively, maintaining a lead over Rast, who is more than seven seconds behind. Other competitors like Ferdinand Habsburg in the #35 Alpine and Earl Bamber in the #38 Cadillac trail even further back.
In LMP2, Job van Uitert leads after Esteban Masson fell from pole to sixth. Meanwhile, in LMGT3, Jack Hawksworth's #78 Lexus overtook polesitter Mattia Drudi's #27 Aston Martin post-pit stops. The only incident involved Martin Berry's #61 Mercedes, which spun but sustained no major damage.
