The BYS Women's Sportsboat Regatta 2026 highlights the rising power of female leadership in sailing. This event, held on March 21-22, showcases how female sailors are reshaping Australia’s competitive racing landscape.
In its fifth year, the regatta has transformed from a small round-robin format into a fully subscribed fleet racing competition. All available loan and club boats were booked, with teams bringing their own J/70s, marking a significant cultural shift in the sport. The regatta focuses on empowering women by offering them opportunities to lead in competitive sailing. Unlike traditional programs, this event emphasizes skill progression, allowing female sailors to take charge of critical on-board roles, from helming to tactical decision-making.
Over two days, nine teams and 39 sailors engaged in 15 fast-paced short-course races, each lasting around 15 minutes. Challenging conditions with winds of five to ten knots tested the sailors' skills and teamwork. Local team Lithium achieved a noteworthy victory in Race 10, while Natasha Miller's Jabiru won Race 14. Ultimately, Karyn Gojnich and her crew on Jumpin' Jack Flash clinched the overall title, demonstrating the strength and talent of women in sailing. This regatta not only accelerates skill development but also fosters a more inclusive future for the sport.
