The 2026 49er, 49erFX, and Nacra 17 World Championship kicks off tomorrow in Saint-Pierre-Quiberon, promising intense competition on the Atlantic coast. This event is crucial as it shapes the journey toward the LA 2028 Olympic Games.

Close to 350 sailors from over 30 nations are set to compete, showcasing a remarkable talent pool just two years before the Olympics. The championship runs from May 12-17, with medal races broadcasted live on France TV and the 49er YouTube channel.

The 49er fleet stands out this year, particularly since 2025 World Champions Diego Botín and Florian Trittel are absent, focusing on SailGP and America's Cup. Germany’s Richard Schultheis and Fabian Rieger emerge as early favorites, having won the Trofeo Princesa Sofía after a thrilling comeback. China's Zaiding Wen and Tian Liu captured gold at the Semaine Olympique Française, marking them as serious contenders. Their teammates Xin Wang and Tianyu Qi also podiumed in Palma, signaling China's growing strength in the 49er class.

Ireland’s Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove, fresh off a silver finish in Hyères, aim to prove their consistency after a rocky 2025. The stage is set for a championship filled with surprises and fierce rivalries.
