Elfyn Evans capitalizes on his road position to secure a commanding lead in Rally Japan, finishing Friday with a 15.7-second advantage over Oliver Solberg. This performance highlights the strategic importance of road positioning in rally racing.

Evans, despite starting sixth and facing damp conditions, found his rhythm after a stellar run through Isegami’s Tunnel, which propelled him into the lead. He maintained this momentum, also winning on the Inabu/Shitara test. The Welshman’s ability to navigate tricky conditions underscores his skill and control in the Toyota GR Yaris.

Oliver Solberg, who initially led the rally, faced setbacks after a close encounter with a deer during stage three, costing him valuable time. He expressed disappointment but remains in second place overall. Nine-time champion Sebastien Ogier, starting the day in third, struggled with his road position, finishing 17.1 seconds behind Evans. Ogier aimed for improvements in the afternoon stages but battled to find the right setup in his car.

In the fight for fourth, Sami Pajari surged ahead after a strong finish, while Thierry Neuville's tire choices hampered his performance, resulting in a significant drop. The competition intensifies as the rally progresses, with the top four drivers all from Toyota.
