Evans, the World Rally Championship leader, expertly navigates the tricky terrain, seizing the lead after an outstanding performance in the Isegami’s Tunnel stage. Starting first on the road, he capitalizes on his position, finishing 7.5 seconds faster than his teammate Solberg, who initially took the lead with a win in the Asuke stage. However, the rally takes a turn when Solberg encounters four deer on the road during SS3 Inabu/Shitara 1, forcing him to brake and losing him crucial time.
He admits the encounter rattled his confidence, causing him to lose about six seconds. Despite this, Solberg finishes the morning loop just 0.5 seconds ahead of last year’s Rally Japan winner, Sébastien Ogier, who struggles with road conditions after starting sixth. Ogier falls behind Evans, acknowledging the difficulty of regaining lost time on tarmac.
With Evans holding a 17.7-second lead, the pressure mounts for Solberg and Ogier as the rally progresses, setting the stage for an intense battle ahead.
