Oliver Solberg's bid for the lead at Rally Japan ends in disaster as he crashes out while dueling with Elfyn Evans. This incident dramatically alters the competitive landscape of the championship.
Solberg was setting impressive split times during stage 10, challenging Evans, the rally leader, and third-placed Sebastien Ogier when he lost control of his GR Yaris. The 24-year-old collided with a tree, inflicting severe damage to his vehicle and forcing an early exit. With Solberg sidelined, Evans now enjoys a 14.6-second lead over nine-time world champion Ogier.
Evans expressed frustration at the delay caused by encountering Solberg’s wrecked car, admitting it impacted his stage time. Ogier, who won the stage after it was red-flagged due to a separate incident, reflected on Solberg’s risk-taking and acknowledged that such a crash was not unexpected.
Toyota's sporting director, Kaj Lindstrom, empathized with the situation while emphasizing the unfortunate nature of Solberg's crash. This marks Solberg's third significant crash this season, following incidents in Croatia and the Canary Islands. In his absence, Toyota teammate Sami Pajari climbs to third place, with Takamoto Katsuta and Adrien Fourmaux rounding out the top five.
