New Zealand's Seb Menzies and George Lee Rush make history as the youngest 49er world champions after a nail-biting comeback in Quiberon, France. This victory adds to their European title from last year, showcasing their rapid rise in the sailing world.
Menzies and Lee Rush entered the two-race medal series with a slim two-point lead over Australia’s Harry Price and Max Paul, while Germany's Jakob Meggendorfer and Andreas Spranger were just behind. Their first medal race went perfectly, allowing the Kiwis to extend their lead and secure a win against seasoned competitors Bart Lambriex and Floris van de Werken.
However, chaos struck in the final race when the duo was penalized for an early start, forcing them to restart near the back of the pack. Despite the setback, they clawed back to fifth at the top mark, but faced fierce competition from Germany, Austria, and Poland. In a bold move, they executed an aggressive gybe-set maneuver at the last mark, finding stronger wind and surging past rivals.
They finished fifth in the race, clinching the title by the narrowest margin. "It's an amazing feeling," Menzies said. Lee Rush emphasized their calmness amid the pressure, stating, "We just kept our heads down and gave ourselves a chance.
