Merlin Rocket Youth Training at Fishers Green Sailing Club culminates in a thrilling showdown! This event not only showcased young talent but also highlighted the competitive spirit of the Merlin Rocket class.
The final training session took place on Saturday, May 23rd, under sweltering sun and light winds, with eight sailors forming four boats. Participants included seasoned competitors who previously sailed single-handed dinghies like the Optimist and ILCA. The standout duo of Jameson and the narrator reunited for the day, guided by their expert coach, Courtney.
After mastering techniques like popping the top batten, the sailors dove into the round-robin series for the Willetts Trophy. The racing was fierce, leading to a dramatic three-way tie for first place. The tension peaked during the final fleet race, where George and Matthew secured a brilliant win, but it was Jameson and the narrator who clinched the overall victory thanks to their solid performance earlier in the series.
With the Willetts Trophy in hand, the duo expresses their excitement for future crewing opportunities. The Merlin Rocket youth training series has fostered growth among participants, many of whom sailed the class for the first time. This event signals a bright future for youth sailing in the Merlin Rocket fleet!
