Australia's top sailors gear up for the ILCA European Championship in Kastela, Croatia, kicking off this week. This championship promises to showcase the intense preparation and skill of the Australian ILCA6 Squad, who have been training at the Australian Institute of Sport European Training Centre in Varese, Italy.
Mara Stransky, a Tokyo 2020 Olympian, is poised for a strong performance after finishing eighth at the Trofeo Princesa Sofia. She aims to refine her execution, stating, "The goal for this week is to tidy up and allow the processes to do their thing." The regatta's unpredictable conditions, ranging from light breezes to strong mountain winds, will challenge the sailors' versatility.
Ethan McAullay and Zac Littlewood lead the charge in the ILCA7 fleet, with McAullay in good form after his recent finishes of 13th and 7th at previous events. He targets a podium finish at this peak event, emphasizing the importance of adaptability to varying conditions.
The championship features 12 races over six days, from May 17-22, with a fleet of 123 sailors in the ILCA6 and 179 in the ILCA7. This event could set the stage for significant achievements as the season progresses.
