Seb Menzies and George Lee Rush have taken the lead at the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships in France, showcasing their talent in the crucial gold fleet phase. This performance sets the stage for a potential first world title for the Kiwi duo.
On day four, Menzies and Lee Rush demonstrated impressive tactical skills, finishing with scores of 5, 8, and 2, putting them four points ahead in the 49er standings. Their ability to navigate the challenging conditions of the Bay of Quiberon reflects their maturity and strategic acumen. “Conditions today were quite shifty and funky,” Lee Rush noted, highlighting the day’s challenges.
The Kiwis excelled in their starts, a critical factor in their ascent to the top. Menzies emphasized, “In gold fleet, it’s really hard if you don’t have a good start because everyone is so good.” Their second-place finish in a dramatic final race, despite a penalty turn near the finish line, solidifies their championship lead.
In other standings, Australians Harry Price and Max Paul are second, while Germany's Richard Schultheis and Fabian Rieger sit in third. New Zealand's Mattias Coutts and Oscar Gunn improved to 24th overall in the 49er gold fleet. The competition heats up as the regatta approaches its climax.
