British duo James Grummett and Rhos Hawes dominate the high winds to secure two victories on Day 2 of the 49er World Championship in Quiberon, France. Here’s why their performance could redefine the competition landscape.
Facing gusts exceeding 25 knots, Grummett and Hawes powered through the yellow group, showcasing their skills against fierce rivals. They battled closely with Germans Jakob Meggendorfer and Andreas Spranger, trading positions throughout the race. Grummett noted, “We were basically glued to them for that whole last race,” emphasizing the intense rivalry and camaraderie.
While the British team thrived, Austrians Keanu Prettner and Jakob Flachberger managed to maintain their overall lead despite a challenging day with scores of 8,4. The race committee eventually sent the fleets back to shore as conditions worsened, with Hawes stating, “It was turning into survival racing.”
Swiss pair Seb Schneiter and Arno de Planta rose to second overall after a strong performance in the red group, while Chinese competitors Zaiding Wen and Tian Liu claimed third. Ireland’s Rob Dickson and Sean Waddilove rebounded impressively with scores of 2,3. Meanwhile, the Indian team of Prince Noble and Manu Kurisingal continues to face challenges as they adapt to the tough conditions.
