The Melges 24 European Sailing Series 2026 kicks off in Opatija, revealing a grueling first day dominated by challenging wind conditions. Here’s why the performance of the Croatian U25 team CRO-A-SAIL could set the tone for the entire series.
The day began with early racing as the Adriatic tramuntana wind tested sailors’ endurance and skill. The Race Committee launched the fleet shortly after 8:00 AM, seizing a narrow window before the breeze faded, leading to a temporary halt in racing. However, as conditions improved later in the afternoon, two additional races were completed under lighter, variable winds.
CRO-A-SAIL emerged as the standout performer, securing two race victories and a second-place finish. Stipe Vitaljic noted the team’s strong preparation over the winter, stating, “Our main goal is the World Championship next year, but we're already seeing progress.” Helm Roko Stipanovic highlighted their adaptability in changing conditions, asserting, “The team did a superb job.”
Trailing them, Italy's MELGINA, led by Paolo Brescia, maintained pressure with a race win and two second-place finishes. In the Corinthian division, Croatia's LITTLE A, helmed by Stjepan Cesic, showcased resilience, recovering from an early setback to lead the standings. The competition is fierce as teams aim for consistency in this prestigious series.
