Matthew Brennan withdraws from Milan-San Remo due to illness, dealing a blow to Visma-Lease a Bike. The promising 20-year-old sprinter was set for his debut in the prestigious race this Saturday. Brennan, who clinched the Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne title and won 12 races in his rookie pro season, will have to wait another year for this opportunity.
With Brennan out, Visma-Lease a Bike pivots to rely on 2020 champion Wout van Aert, American Matteo Jorgenson, and former Ghent-Wevelgem winner Christophe Laporte. Victor Campenaerts steps in as Brennan's replacement, racing in his fourth Milan-San Remo, after finishing 87th last year. Brennan's return date remains uncertain, but he is tentatively scheduled for Gent-Wevelgem on March 29, followed by Dwars door Vlaanderen and the Tour of Flanders, culminating in Paris-Roubaix.
