Teenager Oda Aune Gissinger makes a stunning impact at her Women’s WorldTour debut, seizing the mountain jersey at the Vuelta a Burgos Féminas. Here’s why her performance could reshape the competition moving forward.
In the opening stage, 19-year-old Gissinger, riding for Hitec Products-Fluid Control, formed a breakaway with 20-year-old Irene Cagnazzo from Vini Fantini-BePink. They dominated for nearly 110km but were caught 17km from the finish, paving the way for a dramatic sprint finish won by Lorena Wiebes of SD Worx-Protime. Gissinger, however, showcased her climbing prowess by clinching all three mountain sprints, amassing 18 points to secure her place in the mountain jersey.
Gissinger’s strategy involved strong cooperation with Cagnazzo, but she ultimately outpaced her rival on the climbs to guarantee her points. With no classified climbs in the next stage, Gissinger will hold the jersey for at least another day, but stages 3 and 4 offer critical points that could influence the mountain classification. The competition is heating up, and Gissinger's early success signals her potential as a formidable contender.
