The Absa Cape Epic mountain bike race kicks off March 15-22 in South Africa, spanning 700 kilometers and featuring 16,000 meters of elevation gain. Over eight grueling days, riders tackle the rugged Western Cape terrain, with mechanical failures, illness, and crashes adding to the challenge. The race format requires pairs to stay within two minutes of each other, demanding both endurance and teamwork.
It begins with a 20km prologue at Meerendal Wine Estate, followed by stages through Montagu, Greyton, and finally Stellenbosch for the last two days. Last year, Annika Langvad triumphed in the women's race alongside Sofia Gómez Villafañe, while Nino Schurter claimed his third title in the men's event with Filippo Colombo. With no returning champions this year, fresh contenders emerge, promising an open and competitive field in both UCI elite categories.
