Visma-Lease a Bike CEO Richard Plugge reveals promising advancements in their search for a new title sponsor, with an announcement potentially just months away. This development is crucial for the team, which needs to secure around €20 million to match the budgets of elite cycling teams.
After Visma announced a reduced financial commitment in February, the Dutch team faces a significant challenge. Plugge indicates that discussions with several promising candidates are underway, stating, “It's a no until it's a yes, and it’s only a yes once it’s actually finalized.” He expresses optimism about the ongoing talks, highlighting a strong pool of existing sponsors, including Lease a Bike, Rabobank, and Mistral AI.
The team aims to find a main sponsor that can contribute approximately 30% of its budget, which ranges from €60 to €70 million. Plugge remains hopeful that a deal could be announced at the upcoming Tour, but assures fans that a longer timeline is acceptable as well. He emphasizes the importance of keeping options open across America, Europe, and Asia, drawing parallels with successful sponsorship models from other sports. This development could reshape the team’s future and impact their competitive edge in the cycling world.
