Anthony Edwards is officially ineligible for NBA postseason awards. The Minnesota Timberwolves rule him out for Thursday night’s game against the Detroit Pistons due to a right knee injury and an illness. Edwards has only played 59 games this season, with just 58 counting towards the NBA’s 65-game minimum for awards eligibility. The Timberwolves have six games remaining in the regular season.

Edwards did not take the court in Detroit, one game after posting 17 points in 23 minutes against the Dallas Mavericks. That marked his return after a six-game absence due to a right knee issue.

Timberwolves coach Chris Finch confirms that illness is the reason for Edwards’ absence against the Pistons in the team’s 113-108 loss. The four-time All-Star and two-time all-league guard has consistently made his mark, finishing seventh in NBA MVP voting for the last two seasons.

Despite averaging a career-high 29.3 points this season, Edwards will not reach the 70-game mark he maintained during his first five seasons in the league. The Timberwolves face increasing challenges as they push toward the postseason without one of their star players.
