203 boats from 14 nations kick off the 2026 OK Dinghy World Championship at Hellerup Sejlklub, marking it as the second largest event in the class's history. This championship not only celebrates sailing but also honors the 70th anniversary of the OK Dinghy, designed by Knud Olsen in 1956.
What follows highlights the impressive turnout and the legacy that continues to shape this competition. After three days of preparation at Skovshoven Havn, the fleet moved to Hellerup for the opening ceremony in a historical venue once used as a movie studio. Organizers from Hellerup Sejlklub and The Royal Danish Yacht Club have mobilized a vast team of volunteers to ensure everything runs smoothly.
The practice race revealed typical Danish weather, with winds of 8-12 knots and a mix of clouds and sun. The fleet, split into two groups, will tackle two races daily from Monday to Friday. Lars Olsen, son of the designer, reflects on his father's legacy, stating, "He would be proud... after about 70 years, it's astonishing." As competition begins, the excitement builds, promising a week of thrilling sailing ahead. Racing starts Monday at 13:00.
