Ginan dominates the third race of the West Offshore Products Coastal Sprint, showcasing its prowess in challenging conditions. What follows puts the entire race into context, highlighting the significance of this event for developing offshore sailors.

Thirteen boats set sail from Queenscliff into 10-15 knots of south-westerly wind, navigating the tricky waters of Bass Strait. Ginan, a J111, led the race from the start, with co-skipper Cam McKenzie praising the course as a perfect test for new crew members. Notably, Nes Srijumnong, a participant in the KISS program, successfully completed her first offshore race aboard Ginan.

Despite strong competition from Shimmer and Cadibarra, Ginan's strategic decision to head east on leg two allowed them to reclaim and extend their lead, finishing first overall in AMS, ORC, and PHS categories. Shimmer, skippered by Steve Twentyman, initially took the lead but could not maintain the advantage as conditions shifted.

The Coastal Sprint Series continues to serve as a valuable training ground for aspiring offshore sailors. Jeremy Capon, skipper of Freeloader, reflected on the steep learning curve, while Philip Cox of Valiant faced challenges from variable winds and obstacles like incoming tankers. This race reinforces the series' role in building skills and confidence for longer ocean races.
