The 2026 Optimist North American Championship wraps up in Halifax Harbour, showcasing the extraordinary talent of 172 young sailors from across the Americas and beyond. This event highlights the spirit of international camaraderie and fierce competition among the next generation of sailors.
Hosted by the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, in partnership with the Canadian Optimist Dinghy Association and the International Optimist Dinghy Association, the championship fosters friendship and sportsmanship. Event Chairman Scott Carroll emphasizes the importance of this gathering, stating it’s a platform for youth to build confidence through sailing.
William Keilty of Canada clinches the title of champion with an impressive 12 points, followed by Briggs Kossmann from the USA in second with 20 points, and Puerto Rico's Ines Mendez-Larminaux as the top North American girl sailor in third with 52 points.
In team events, Team USA 1 seizes victory in the Team Race Championship, while Team Argentina 2 triumphed in the Nations Cup.
Halifax Harbour serves not just as a breathtaking backdrop but also presents challenging conditions that test these young competitors. The championship reinforces the core values of the Optimist Class: fair competition, learning, and respect, marking a significant chapter in the sailing journey for many.
