Sixty young sailors gear up for the inaugural SB20 Tasmanian Schools Championship this Saturday at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania. This event marks a significant step in establishing a key annual fixture in the SB20 Australian sailing calendar, especially with the 2029 SB20 World Championship on the horizon in Hobart.
Fourteen local teams and one interstate entry are set to compete, showcasing a strong commitment to youth sailing. The Fahan School and The Hutchins School lead the charge with two and four teams, respectively, while The Friends' School enters three teams. St Virgil's College returns with their boat after a pause, and new schools like Kingston High School and St Mary's College join the action, indicating a growing interest in the sport.
Paul McCartney, Class President of the SB20 Association of Australia, emphasizes the event's role in nurturing young talent, stating, "Introducing enthusiastic youth sailors to sportsboat sailing is crucial for building the SB20 Class in Australia." Competitive races start at 10:15 AM, featuring up to eight windward/leeward races with spinnakers. This championship not only promotes skill development but also highlights the SB20 as an ideal transition for young sailors moving from dinghies to keelboats.
