The Class40 fleet in the 2nd edition of the CIC MED CHANNEL RACE is just 10 nautical miles from Menorca, setting the stage for an intense showdown. What follows puts the entire race into perspective as the competitors navigate a challenging course in the western Mediterranean.
As of 08:00 today, the ranking shows No. 134 STELLA NOVA, helmed by Omar Naas and Louis Torreilles, leading a close duel with the PHARE40 team on No. 142, skippered by Mathieu Claveau and François Verdier, who trail by only 2.7 nautical miles. With 250 miles remaining to the finish in Marseille, the leaders have already covered 894 miles, averaging around 8 knots.
The fleet regrouped dramatically yesterday, with seven crews clustered within 32 miles. Tactics played a crucial role; competitors had to choose between a direct but slower route or heading south for better wind and speed. This strategy led to a unique situation where many boats found themselves within the Algerian Maritime Responsibility and Control Zone.
As the race intensifies, all eyes are on the final gate at Mallorca. Can PHARE40 overtake STELLA NOVA? Meanwhile, the women's team MER CONNEXION, aboard Class40 number 89, continues to impress, challenging their rivals fiercely.
