Day 1 of the Tasar World Championships 2026 kicks off in Okinawa, Japan, with all three races completed successfully. Here’s why this event is a must-watch for sailing fans.

Leading the pack after the opening day are Jonathan McKee and Libby Johnson McKee from the USA, followed closely by fellow Americans Dalton and Libby Bergan in second, and Michael and Molly Karas in third. Remarkably, all three top teams are husband-and-wife duos. Jonathan McKee, a two-time Olympic medallist, is competing in his tenth Tasar World Championship and expresses his excitement for the event. “I love Japan and this World Championship has been a wonderful experience,” he says.

Among the competitors is Japanese Olympic bronze medallist Kazuto Seki, sailing with his two sons, emphasizing the event's family-friendly atmosphere. Local Okinawan team Misaki Taira and Yuna Kobayashi, both high school students, make their Tasar debut and are eager to improve after gaining confidence despite their inexperience.

The Tasar class uniquely blends elite sailors with recreational competitors, fostering a spirit of camaraderie. The event also engages the local community through activities like the 'Kunjan Sea School.' The championships continue until June 12, promising more thrilling racing and international unity in Okinawa.
