The International Maxi Association (IMA) is set to kick off its 47th season in 2026, ushering in a new era with fresh leadership and an influx of maxi yacht owners. This pivotal change signals a potential transformation in the world of maxi yacht racing.
Viewers will discover how these developments may impact the competitive landscape of the sport.
Maurits van Oranje-Nassau, a seasoned competitor and owner of the Wally 80 Sud, steps in as the new President, succeeding Benoît de Froidmont after a seven-year tenure. The IMA, recognized by World Sailing, holds exclusive rights to conduct World Championships for maxi yachts, which are defined as vessels over 18.29 meters.
In 2026, the IMA will host two Rolex IMA World Championships: one for the Maxi 1 class (80-100ft) and another for the newly defined Maxi Grand Prix class (71-77ft). This follows the successful implementation of these categories last year during the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup.
New board members include Peter Dubens and Giovanni Lombardi Stronati, representing the Maxi Grand Prix class, while Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones showcases the innovative 100ft Verdier-designed Magic Carpet e. Secretary General Andrew McIrvine emphasizes the health of the maxi fleet and the IMA's commitment to evolving rules that promote youth and female participation in the sport.
