Lindsey Vonn reveals she nearly lost her left leg after a horrific crash in the women's downhill at the Milan Cortina Olympics. In an Instagram post, Vonn details severe injuries that exceeded her initial complex tibia fracture. The crash, occurring just 13 seconds into her run on February 8, led to compartment syndrome, a condition where excessive pressure in the muscle restricts blood flow and risks permanent damage. Vonn credits Dr. Tom Hackett, her orthopedic surgeon, for performing a life-saving fasciotomy. "He filleted it open [and] let it breathe, and he saved me," she states. Vonn emphasizes that Hackett was in Cortina due to her prior ACL tear in the left knee. She has since been discharged from the hospital but also sustained a broken right ankle in the crash.
