St. Petersburg, FL, is set to host the next North American Stopover of The Ocean Race in 2027. Sail Newport, Rhode Island’s Public Sailing Center, opts out after three successful North American editions. The decision comes after a comprehensive evaluation of its nonprofit mission and community priorities, alongside rising financial demands.
Sail Newport prioritizes its commitment to public access to sailing and marine education over hosting the event. Executive Director Brad Read emphasizes the importance of a financially sustainable event for the community. “We are proud of the legacy we’ve built with The Ocean Race, but we also recognize our responsibilities,” Read states.
The focus now shifts to initiatives that align with Sail Newport’s core mission. This transition opens a significant opportunity for the Southeastern U.S. maritime community, promising a positive experience for sailors and visitors alike.
