The battle for supremacy largely unfolded between Howie Hodgson's Swan 75 True and Michael Hennessy's Class40 Scowling Dragon, with both boats remaining within a mere 20 miles of each other for much of the journey. Their similar CSA ratings added to the intensity, with Hennessy noting that a few hours of favorable winds could have changed the outcome.
Weather played a crucial role, as the race started without the expected strong tradewinds, leading to a light 10-knot breeze in the early days. The frontrunners eventually navigated through squalls of 20-30 knots, while others struggled in lighter air, leading to missed time limits.
