Sailors from across the country gathered at Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club for the Contender Northern Championship 2026, defying Grimwith's usual weather with warm, sunny conditions. The weekend kicked off with three back-to-back races, showcasing fierce competition and tactical sailing.

James Spikesley and Peter Snowden quickly established themselves as frontrunners, dominating Saturday’s races. In the first race, Spikesley took first, followed by Snowden and Tom Hooton. The second race saw local talents Neil Ferguson and Dick Buttner briefly lead before Spikesley and Snowden surged ahead again. By the end of day one, Spikesley and Snowden were strong overnight leaders.

Sunday brought cooler, unpredictable winds, challenging competitors and race officer Stewart Walker. Martin Metcalfe capitalized on the tricky conditions, winning the first race, but Snowden clawed back to finish second. Race five witnessed Spikesley regaining control, finishing ahead of Hooton and Metcalfe.

In the final race, Spikesley excelled once more, ultimately securing the overall championship win. Rodger White claimed second place, with Snowden finishing third overall. The event highlighted exceptional sailing skills and resilience amid varying weather conditions, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
