A crew from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) makes history by winning the prestigious Congressional Cup in Long Beach, California. This victory marks a significant achievement in world match racing and highlights the strength of CYCA's Youth Sailing Academy.
The Congressional Cup, known as the 'granddaddy' of match racing, is the longest-running event of its kind in North America. Remarkably, this is only the second time in 61 years that an Australian team has claimed the title, with the last victory occurring 38 years ago. Led by Cole Tapper, the team demonstrated resilience after facing a 2-0 deficit in the semi-finals against an American opponent, ultimately winning three consecutive races to reach the finals.
Tapper expressed his elation, stating, "Today was a really awesome day...we're just really stoked." CYCA Commodore Dr. Sam Haynes praised the team's performance and their commitment to the club, emphasizing the exceptional training provided by head coach Jordan Reece.
This triumph underscores the high-quality pathways offered by CYCA and celebrates the dedication of its young sailors. The sailing community eagerly anticipates the return of the champions from the U.S. to commemorate this remarkable achievement.
