Ott Tänak joins Toyota as a test driver to develop the new car for the WRC 2027. This decision marks a milestone in the Japanese team's preparation for the upcoming World Rally Championship season.
Tänak, world champion in 2019, returns to the wheel after a sabbatical year in the top category, and his experience will be crucial in the development of the prototype, which has already logged over 2000 kilometers of testing. Toyota, the only conventional manufacturer working on a new car under the technical regulations set to take effect, has been experimenting with different surfaces, from asphalt to snow and gravel.
The new WRC 2027 will be built with a cost cap of 345,000 euros and will be based on the current Rally2 cars, incorporating braking and steering systems from that category. Early images of the prototype have sparked speculation about its design, which significantly differs from the current GR Yaris Rally1.
Kevin Struyf, head of engineering at Toyota, emphasizes that the car remains a prototype and that there are still no certainties about the final model. Testing will continue in the coming weeks, and anticipation is growing around what this new era of the WRC will bring.
